My first cat in Finland was a young cat that tried to climb into someone’s car at a rest stop in the south of Finland. I asked for a cat at the local animal shelter, and she was put in the cat carrier on a dark winter evening without me even getting a good look at her. She was so quiet on the car ride home I had a creeping doubt that there wasn’t a cat in the carrier at all. She was a multi-coloured cat of unknown parentage, and I named her Miksi (Finnish word “why”), as in “why did I get this cat?” She was street-smart, a very skilful hunter, and a natural foster mom to the second cat I adopted. This watercolour was painted from a photograph of Miksi rolling and basking, and really, lolling, in the garden on a summer day.
